This is the interview with Matt from Channel Surfing With Lisa
from the Chicagoland Comcast channel. It's just a simple interview.
They're both sitting in seats int he Allstate Arena, in Chicago,
IL. Matt is wearing his brownish, velvet shirt, buttondown..top
three buttons un-buttoned..lol
Matt: Once we started watching it, and just became big fans,
we were like wow this is the coolest thing ever. Imean these
guys were real life superheroes. These are real people. Wrestling
has so much athleticism, its got drama, you know it's got humor.
Its got everything. Everything rolled into one.
Lisa: Right. Well you took the tag team between you and jeff,
you took it to a different level. I remember back in October
of '99 for no mercy, you guys came out with the ladder match.
and you blew people away 'cuz they did not think anybody could
possibly do any thing like you did in the ring.
Matt: And that was definetly a milestone, for both of our careers,
you know for myself, Jeff and Edge and Christian. You know that
was really point. I've said it a million times and i'll say
it again. That was the point were we went from WWe wrestlers
to WWE superstars. Because we really elevated ourselves and
from there you know the race has been on.
Lisa: Well how do you get past the thing in the ring where you
in the ring and your on a ladder thats at least 10 or 20 feet
high. In your mind, thinking 'Oh My Goodness, could I possibly
get hurt in a match like this' Or is that something you just
don't think about because you have a tendency to let that happen
Lisa: So how does it feel now that you're a singles wrestler,
you've got Mattitude going on,
Matt: Yeah! Mattitude is running a muck!
Lisa: I know. So how did that all come about. So where did Mattitude
come from?
Matt: Well I just knew that whenever Jeff and I split from each
other, and he was on Raw and I was on Smackdown, It was time
for us to develop several personalities, I went ahead and took
the initiative that I was gonna develop my own different personality,
you know I was goin somewhere different. So I came up with the
whole Matt Hardy Version One. Version One saying how this is
the true and pure form of Matt Hardy, you're not seeing the
extension of Matt from the Hardy Boyz tag team. You're seeing
the actual Matt Hardy. And then Mattitude just developed on.
I was actually joking with one of my buddies down in the gym.
I said "you know for the longest time is was WWE Attitude.
What if I said that it was a new era that i'm ushering in, and
it's WWE Mattitude" And we'd start laughin, Wow, that's
actually catchy. I said if you'd say that it would actually
catch on. And there's so many ways i've used it you know. "I'm
gonna give you a Mattitude adjustment,". You know now I
have Mattitude Followers, or MFers, to call for short. Shannon
Moore runnin around. Actually he's at home right now doin my
laundry. He's gotta get thew it cuz he's gotta mow my grass
today too.
Lisa: That's incredible. So the response that you got from the
crowd then, I mean so they just excepted it right away?
Matt: Yeah, I mean it actually caught on really quick. And uh,
now it's amazing the about of signs, and I got a real cool entrace
too. Actually my entrance is like the windows media player,
and on the side it's got what's called Matt Facts. So that's
like the funnest part of my day. I come up wtih a couple Matt
Facts, like "Matt has a heated toilet seat", that
was one of the best remebered ones. Or you know whatever. "Matt
has had seven speeding tickets" you know whatever it may
be. Amd these are fun every week. People look forward to those.
So it's been real fun to come up with your own personality.
And somethin that's been catchy and somethin that's been successful.
So I just wanna keep rollin' with it. I've got a lot of other
ideas that I wanna incorporate into the character.
Lisa: So how differnt is it though for you to be by yourself
now and not, you know with Jeff, and part of the tag team?
Matt: It was real different to begin with. Just 'cause I was
so used to being in the ring for a few minutes and then tagging
out, and catching my breath. But now, you know if your in a
fifteen minute match, your going fifteen minutes straight, regaurdless.
So I definetely had to pump up my cardio a little bit. And I
had to make sure my ring conditioning was at it's peak. You
know, the best it could be. So uh, it was differnt at first,
but now that i'm used used to it, And i've kind of gotten that
mindset of being a singles competitor and it's a lot of fun
and really to go as far as you can go in the sports entertainment
buisness, in the WWE, you've gotta be a singles wrestler. So
it's time for me to do that.
Lisa: Now did you have to create some of your own moves, because
I know a lot of the moves you were doing we're feeding off of
Jeff. So, I mean, your own your own now.
Matt: Yeah, there's been a few moves that i've added to my aresenal,
like the Side Effect, and the Ricocet. I've got a few different
things that i've added, you know just because, like you said,
going from a tag-team, where you have two guys working together
to perform one move. You know now you gotta get your own singnature
stuff. So you know incorporate some of that in there, Every
thing's really caught on, It's been a lot of fun. Actually you
know playing a 'bad guy' so to say instead of a 'good guy' has
been a real fun change of role and a good change or pace, because
I was doin the Hardy Boyz thing for so long. So it kinda, almost
re-energized me career wise too.
Lisa: And the Hardy Boyz, I mean basically you did all you could.
I mean, I'm asuming that's why you guys decided you wanted to
split it off.
Matt: Yeah, i mean even in the short time that we were together,
we'd had two years back to back match of the years. With the
TLC matches. You know, we won six Wold Tag Team Titles, we've
been in video games, we've had DVDs, and we've got our autobiography
out. You know as a tag team there's really not much left to
do. So they said, well, lets see what these guys can do as single
guys. And I'm up for the challenge. And I hope Jeff is as well.
Lisa: Well I think a lot of people were surprised though, when
that did happen. 'Cuase I don't think anybody really comprehended
the fact that you guys could actually go your own separate ways.
And I know with the division now with Raw having exclusive wrestlers
and smackdown having exclusive wrestlers, it has to be different
for you too not to be able to mingle with the guys. 'Cause you
guys used to travel all the time together.
Matt: That was somethin, once again, that was really different
at first. And i've been with Jeff for eight years. You know,
so now were not traveling together. It was different to begin
with, but luckily I did have Shannon. He did grow up like two
miles from me. So it's almost like having another little brother.
So it's fun having him on the road too.
Lisa: That's great. So how different is it for you to go from
Smackdown to a Pay Per View event at the end of the month? Is
it a different atmosphere for you?
Matt: Yeah, basically you know, we're gonna turn up the voltage.
And whenever you go to a pay per view, I mean that's our big
event. That's where you go once hundred and fifty percent. And
that's where people are really paying in to seeing a big blow
up match or somethin that's had a lot of build up behind it.
And it's time to give people that pay off.
Lisa: And Summerslam is a big, big pay per view event. I mean
you've got Wrestlemania, you've got Backlash, I mean actually,
every single month, you're guaranteed a big pay per view event.
Matt: Yeah, absolutely. Now I mean with the WWE, we've got more
brand name stars and more big stars then there's ever been before.
If you look back at Wrestlmania this year, it was loaded. There
were like five matches that were like main events. I mean every
match that was on Wrestlemania, you know, could have been qualified
as a super match. There was no fill in matches on there at all.
And Summerslam, it's the biggest event of the summer. And you
know, it's right back up there with wresltmania as far as being
the biggest events of the year. And everybody's just excited
when summerslam comes around. I especially am. Because i'm a
big fan of the summer. Um, you know Summerslam's a big event.
And i'm looking forward to it this year as always.
Lisa: Like Matt said, WWE Summerslam is one of the most exciting
Pay Per View events of the year. It caps off summer and you
get to see it live on Sunday, August 24th from Phoenix, Arizona.
